To create minimum norms for mechanical systems, prescriptive and performance-related requirements are applied. The IMC was developed utilizing broad-based concepts that enable the incorporation of new materials, technologies, and designs. Significant revisions in the 2021 IMC include: Clothes dryer exhaust terminals must be at least 3 feet away from any opening in the building. Spray-applied polyurethane foam on the outside of ducts in attics and crawl spaces to meet smoke and flame index requirements. Inspection and maintenance of fire and smoke dampers necessitates authorized access. The refrigerant tables have been updated with new refrigerants. There are now condensate termination identification marks and discharge limits. Manufacturer-approved combination intake/exhaust terminations are permitted, lowering the separation requirement. Minimum mechanical ventilation for balanced whole-house ventilation
